The Watcher (Leopardi in Rome, 1823)
He could not decide if the city at dusk was the furnace of gods or the oven of man, but he was there nonetheless, like an afterthought. What was the world but an interminable afternoon where sunlight smoldered and seared the rooftops and heat clung to the skulls of churches ? Oracles lay prostrate in the blue dust and shadows wandered aimlessly between the ruins. Things that were once known were now lost. He examined porticoes, columns, doorways leading nowhere. Monuments to crumbling deities. Onearmed soldiers. Statues with broken genitalia. A temple where vestal virgins were slaughtered for letting the sacred fire flicker and die out. If only someone remembered how to light it . . . No one spoke to him on his daily outings— a hunchback going blind, a walking sepulcher climbing up and down the library stairs. He was like a ghost radiating through fog. And he was an eternal connoisseur of absences, of tedious late afternoons in empty piazzas and overheated nights in cramped apartments. He heard clocks tolling from his bedroom at night and felt the dull thud of the hours passing. He watched a full moon lingering behind clouds and saw a terrifying vacuum sealed up around him like air strangled in the lungs of a tunnel. Nothingness: the vacancies between stars, the barrenness of a hilltop overlooking the arches, the silence of a past that no longer exists. Infinity: the distance beyond distances, an impalpable unborn space glittering beyond time, the bountiful emptiness of everything. |

Veglia (Leopardi a Roma,1823)
Monumenti a divinità fatiscenti. Soldati con un solo braccio. Statue dai genitali spezzati. |
